When you say "recognize at boot" what is the message you see?

Should be something like:

hda: <your hard-drive's parameters>
hdc: 620E, ATAPI, CDROM drive

ide1: secondary interface on irq 15
ide0: primary interface on irq 14

If so, your cdrom is on /dev/hdc, and you should select ide/atapi
from the setup program, then select /dev/hdc.

If you select "soundblaster cdrom", setup will try to use
/dev/sbpcd.

The hint of changing the drive id refers to the panasonic drive
interface that creative used before ide/atapi became popular.

Most drives 6x and higher are ide/atapi, and can be plugged into
any ide bus in the computer.  There is a master/slave jumper just
like ide hard drives.
