[ale] pppd works in 2.0.34 but not 2.1.131

OK - I've got the dialup working find and I can connect manually or
automatically. I'm running pppd 2.3.3 and it works find with my 2.0.34
kernel. However, with the 2.1.131 kernel I get the following errors:

Dec 22 14:51:55 localhost pppd[1038]: Serial connection established.
Dec 22 14:51:56 localhost pppd[1038]: Using interface ppp0
Dec 22 14:51:56 localhost pppd[1038]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
Dec 22 14:51:56 localhost pppd[1038]: ioctl(SIOCADDRT) device route:
Network is down(100)
Dec 22 14:52:00 localhost pppd[1038]: Modem hangup
Dec 22 14:52:00 localhost pppd[1038]: Connection terminated.
Dec 22 14:52:02 localhost pppd[1038]: Exit.

Now I've seen this error with my NT setup but when I turn off several
compression options it goes away and everything's cool. Unfortunately,
I've tried turning off every option possible with pppd to no avail. Does
anyone know what this error about the device route is? Besides the
kernel build, everything else is exactly the same. I can happily
reproduce success/failure by reselecting which kernel to boot with under
lilo. My guess is that there's some network option under my 2.1.131 that
I'm not aware of but I don't know enough to tell who's complaining.

    Thanx & later,

        Ben Scherrey
