I had the same problem after installing SuSE 5.3 (on my K6 Linux ignored
the PS/2 mouse, on an other Computer it worked well). Simply try to
compile a new kernel
cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig (you must specify your computer-hardware exactly)
make dep && make clean && make zImage
make modules
make modules_install
if you use LILO, make zlilo
