[ale] gpm hangs under redhat...

I can't speak for 4.2, but I did see this problem under 4.0.
It turned out that it had nothing to do with gpm and a lot
to do with sendmail which was getting started right after it.
Sendmail was trying to verify its host name with an unreachable
DNS or something like that.  I can't remember the exact answer,
but if you think this sounds like it, then check your sendmail
configuration and perhaps your resolv.conf.  You'll know this
is the problem if you let it sit there awhile and then sendmail
finally times out and your boot process continues.
