I would have to agree with the suggestions others have made about just
trying things. I learned most of what I know about Unix/Linux because the
distribution I started with was SLS-1.03 (0.99pl12 kernel) and it had so
many problems that had to be fixed to get it working that it was either
dig around and figure things out or give up. If it would have been a
snap to install & get working I wouldn't know half of what I do now! :-)
I did have lots of Unix knowledgeable folks (not Linux, just Unix since
not too many knew what Linux was at that point) that could refer me to
various pieces of documnetation or make general suggestions. However
with all the other docs, books, newsgroups, and mailing lists that
exist now it should be MUCH easier to get expert or semi-expert advice
(in the case of Todd Lewis :-).
