[ale] TCP/PPP Blockage question

Hello --
I've just installed pppd-2.1.2d and diald, and both seem to work. I
have moved on to bigger and better problems.
When I use PPP to run Netcape, or try a large network dump, I find my
link coming to a halt. Repeatedly running `cat /proc/net/dev' shows
an escalating number of "COLL", which I take to mean "collsions."
It also takes quite a long while to get a packet out under these conditions,
an it frequently adds only to the "COLL" count.
Assuming the tcp package was increasing its backoff time progressively,
I find there is a phrase around line 3456, routhly, in tcp.c, which
suggests the backoff is increasedd with each collision. I tried a couple
of patches there, with no effect, but I didn't really dope out how
tcp.c works. For all I know, it might not be coming from tcp.c at all --
that was my guess after running 'grep backoff' on the source directories.
My system is 1.2.13 (a.out build), pppd-2.1.2d, and diald for demand-
dialing.
If anyone could make a suggestion, that would be great.
