[ale] Laptop and X

Has anyone configured a laptop (compaq contura) for use with XF86?  I got linux
on it, configured the ethernet and have it running nicely, but I can't get the
bloody thing to configure for X.  Any ideas?  It won't set up the display or
find any "clocks".
