I would say your system is broken:

gm Read my posting again. I said, I did NOT MOUNT the floppy. It is not
gm mounted. Here are the steps:

gm 1. Put write protected floppy in drive fd0.
  check

gm 2. Execute 'tar -czvf /dev/hd01440 /home/foo'
gm 3. Get appropriate 'write protected error'
  check:

  jmills:~/incoming$ tar cvf /dev/fd1 dosemu-0.60.4.install.tar.gz
  tar: can't open /dev/fd1 : Read-only file system

gm 4. Take floppy out of drive.
  check
gm 5. Make floppy writeable, ie, 'shut little window on floppy.'
  check
gm 6. Put 'writeable' floppy in drive fd0.
  check
gm 7. Execute 'tar -czvf /dev/hd01440 /home/foo'
gm 8. Still get write protected error on now writable floppy.
  nope:

  jmills:~/incoming$ tar cvf /dev/fd1 dosemu-0.60.4.install.tar.gz
  dosemu-0.60.4.install.tar.gz
  jmills:~/incoming$

gm Am I missing something??

A working version of 'tar' or your file system, maybe? I am running
1.1.87/a.out, FWIW.
