Here's one more tidbit you may find useful:

If you set NOMETAMAIL=TRUE in the environment before invoking elm, it
will just display the MIME message in the usual way.  This is what I
do.  Then, if you've actually installed metamail and decide you want
to process a particular message with it, just "| metamail".
