[ale] LineageOS and other alternate android versions

In the past, there were a few discussions here about the various alternate versions, and I've decided to maybe pick up a used phone and give it a go.  My thought was to give LineageOS a try, since it seems to have the most devices supported.  Any input or advice around this?  Also, what's the current go to reputable source for working used devices?  I've seen unlocked "renewed" Pixels on Amazon, but the comments always have some percentage of people claiming to have received a phone that was not actually unlocked.  
FYI, I'm not really that concerned about cutting edge performance, etc..  I'm currently using an unlocked Nokia branded phone that is extremely slow and annoying.
