I haven't played with *BSD for a long time, my favorite was NetBSD. Ran super fast on Sparc pizza boxes and lunch boxes, and the kernel was pretty small. I think I ran it on my U10, too...
I agree with you on limiting what the fire wall does; that's a good place to shut off as many services and remove as many packages as possible. However, I'll be sticking with Linux for the foreseeable future, so will need to figure it out.
