I agree! As a kid I swore to myself that I'd never reture to Florida.
I always have loved swimming in the ocean and from age 16 onward
beachwear was fun. Since 2008 I assumed that I might retire to Savannah
or Jacksonville. In Savannah, the nice beach area is a 20 mile causeway
drive from downtown so I was considering Jacksonville.
Now I live right across the Beach Blvd from the beach. I can walk 1.5
blocks to my favorite restaurants and there are 50 more within a half
mile walk. Just had the annual air show with the Thunderbirds that flew
right past my balcony very close. Independence Day fireworks are from a
barge a half mile down the beach. Last year the band was The Beach Boys.
(Not a cover band.) The ocean was 78 degrees yesterday. There is live
music about 3 miles away.
I do miss everyone in Georgia who was so nice and welcoming as well as
cooler weather. SoFlo is 90% @$$holes from NY & NJ who drive recklessly.
My beloved 1988 Trans Am was totalled last month by someone running a
stale red light. I wasn't hurt. Still, SoFlo works for me. YMMV.
I know that Mike W is enjoying his retirement in Athens and I can see why.
