[ale] Ubuntu sound?

Yeah, on one thing I watched the on-board mike toggle itself down, 
without me doing anything. Today, with the external mike, the status bar 
said things were fine, but the others said the sound was poor. Both the 
Zoom and OS mike controls looked good, for me.
