Ten years ago that 3.2Ghz 4 core was a hell of a machine. The 20GB RAM
is more than my current daily driver. I was talking about something
like a 2.5Ghz with 4GB or even 2GB.

Updates aren't the problem, assuming you have some time at night to let
the update run.
I was talking about the initial install. I've had initial Gentoo/Funtoo
installs direct to metal take 2 days on some older laptops.
