One *can* do that, but I don't recommend it as a general relief from the
simple truth that a desktop Gentoo computer can take a while to update
everything.
For one thing, not all ebuilds in Portage are marked as "distcc-clean"
and actually, some that are shouldn't be. I've used distcc quite a bit
and I've observed that even if you've set up the host list and make
options to absolutely max out your distcc rig in theory, in practice
that doesn't quite happen over the longer term. (although if you're not
careful, you can pop circuit breakers with the load you can create at
once). DIstcc is especially useful in Gentoo-land if you're focused on
one particular package and do development on it, and you can also set it
up to work on your kernel compiles so if you're doing a lot of kernel
hacking it can be nice to speed up those makes.
It's also nice if you incorporate cross-compiling such that you, say,
have a whole pile of AMD64-arch systems building for, say, an ARM CPU.
