[ale] Why would a uverse ethernet work but not a switch?

Nope.  As far as I know nothing hardware wise changed between when it was 
working and when it stopped. The switches are both current netgear 5port 
that absolutely support switching wires.  The fact that two netgear 
switches can talk to each other across the building wires implies the issue 
is with the AT&T router being unhappy with something and not playing nice. 
This could have been a firmware update to the router..
