Never been an issue here for years & on various versions of OSX.
It's always Just Worked.

1.  When you double-click/launch the .dmg ("disk image") file,
    it should "mount" as its own little filesystem, looks to me
    alot like the loopback thing Linux has.  This is probably
    the part where it "verifies" but it might not.
2.  Drag the LibreOffice icon to where you want it - I use my
    own "private" applications folder but you can put it in the
    system one if you like.
3.  You should now have it installed.
4.  Be sure to "eject" the mounted "filesystem" that resulted
    from your launching that .dmg.
5.  To uninstall, merely drag the icon you originally copied
    over to trash.
