I remember having a 2400 baud modem (took a lightning strike over the phone
line), got a 33.6 with the new machine. Did 56k for a while and then jumped
to dual-line ISDN and single mostly to keep costs down. Apparently I was
residential customer #4 for DSL in Georgia. That was a substantial upgrade.
Spent lots of time on the phone with Bell South tier3 support :-)

I think Prodigy, first ISP, had a 12 or 24 hour limit. Earthlink was 33.6
through ISDN. Their limit was 24 hours. The ISDN limit was none for single
line and $1/hr extra for the second line. Wife set the limit on that :-)

I'm pretty sure the Slackware download was on the 33.6 kbps gear as the end
of that modem was the i386dx system (with the 387 coprocessor!).
