I've certainly had performance issues with my old vm solution during
vm-guest backups..  I think part of the problem is that it's an 8-year-old
hardware installation with limited RAM and HDD I/O, based on
vmware-server-2.  I'm migrating to a new, ovirt-based solution on modern
hardware with 256G RAM and SSD for the VM data.  I'm hoping that as I
migrate over to this new solution my backup performance wont bring the
system to a screatching halt.  I suspect I/O as the issue, because doing
any major I/O based function (e.g. pausing or resuming a VM) would affect
the whole VM system.

I'll know more as I finish my migration over the next several weeks.
