Take live CD of what you want to run on. Put in a demo box until you find one that works. Buy that mobo.

Seems like you would be happier staying on LTS releases.
14.04 --> 16.04   for the 5 yrs of support. Stay on the .1 release
14.04.1 or 16.04.1 ... the others do not provide 5 yrs of support.

Avoid odd years and October releases.
