Well, it's all in how you use it -- the important thing about backups is 
that you have a separate, redundant copy of your data, and that you 
ensure the backups are current/readable/restorable/etc.  That's more of 
a procedural matter than a technical issue.

Most teeth-gnashing when it comes to backups comes from attempting to 
make them utilize cheaper storage than the original/live/hot copy of 
the data you care about.  And not testing recovery mechanisms before 
they're needed.  :)
