[ale] default settings

In order to deal with the GA tax forms I had to give up and download and 
install Adobe's PDF reader.
Much to my surprise it set itself as the default pdf reader. WTF?
I did not want that.  I don't trust Adobe to get security right.
Is it possible to wall off the default linkage of file types to applications 
so this kind of thing doesn't happen again?
