[ale] Router recommendation(s)

After many years of Linksys wrt-54 running dd-wrt I have now switched to
Asus RT-16, also with dd-wrt.

In between the Linksys and the Asus I went through a phase of using Buffalo
(because of how they embraced dd-wrt). I ditched Buffalo because I found
that their models would undergo a minor, unexplained change and suddenly
it's no longer dd-wrt compatible, even though they claim it to be. Wasted
too much money on Buffalo's that were patently not dd-wrt compatible and it
was just too much effort, frankly, to figure it all out and keep pace with
their minor hardware version changes that were coupled with significant
changes iro dd-wrt capabilities.

Until Asus changes their game plan, I'm sticking with the RT-16 and using
dd-wrt. I use them successfully with freeradius and active directory logons
(yeah, I know, don't judge me) as well as with Chillispot hotspot for guest
access in our regional offices. It may not be the most comprehensive
solution to every problem you can think of, but it's an easy, open,
reliable (so far) solution to my problem.

I haven't used Tomato or pfSense on these so cannot give you a comparative
view on that, just say what's worked well for me. I use pfSense on my main
routers and must admit I had not actually considered it for wifi. In my
experience, stick with Asus over Buffalo ... they seem to have lost the
plot a little bit recently. At the price-point, Asus is a win.

Merry Christmas.
