When I was in (Vietnam era) the first specialist was 4th class.  E1 and 
E2 were privates, E3 was private first class, E4 was either "spec" 4 or 
corporal.   I think they took the spec class up to 7. Specialist were 
technical  ranks and usually had no command responsibilities.   It looks 
like they've done away with the spec 5 and above.  A spec 4 is now just 
a specialist.
