[ale] Open suse 13 and display issues HDMI vs DVI

I'm running openSUSE with two monitors, one hdmi and one DVI.
They are working fine without having to do anything to the video settings on the system.
My monitors have inputs for for dvi, hdmi and vga.
The problem I found is that once I have a monitor set for a particular input, I have to have that input plugged in and active before I can change the monitor input to use a different signal type.
For example, If the monitor was plugged into a dvi port, if I unplug it and plug into the hdmi port, the monitor will never respond to hdmi output, unless I plug it back into a live dvi port and change the setting on the monitor to hdmi. I can then plug the monitor back into the hdmi port and it works fine. I have only made the change using the on board monitor menu, not the computer. The computer is only needed to provide a signal so the stupid onscreen monitor menu will be available.
This is an idiotic design (lack of) functionality on the monitor manufacturer's part, but that's what worked for me.
By the way, on my set up, the dvi and hdmi are one video card, so If you have one card for each output, you may have a different issue.

I have a video card with dvi and hdmi connectors. When Open Suse was
installed I had DVI connected and all worked. Now I want to conn the HDMI
instead of the DVI but the display never goes to the HDMI monitor.

So I use a HDMI to DVI converter and the display goes to the HDMI monitor.
It works fine in this setup but I want HDMI output of the desktop to the
HDMI input of the monitor.

Do I have to tinker with the xorg.conf or is there a swappable approach or
run an app that enables HDMI ?
