Much better to just check into ISV for RHEL and SLES.  Let them deal with testing patches, etc...

It depends, but probably not.

I've worked at many places with highly customized software - extremely expensive
to maintain, manage, deploy.

You may be able to build your own distro in a less expensive way, especially if
you don't expect to be paid.
