I once had someone put a contract to me that had language that would 
have made it impossible to contribute to programming projects outside of 
work, essentially stating that all code written by me was to be owned by 
them.

I have never, and will never, execute such an agreement. To date I have 
yet to see one that is reasonable; they are all blanket agreements and I 
won't tie myself to such a thing, ever.

These days, too many corporations assume that they have total control of 
their "human resources".
