[ale] [OT] Real-ID?

Renewing your license would imply extending the expiration date--you can just get the existing license replaced. Worst case, you could claim you lost your license and they'll issue a new one with the same dates. I doubt you'd have to do that, though. If this is true, I'm sure a lot of people will come in to exchange their licenses for the new one.

I got the Passport Card last time I renewed my regular passport. It was an extra $10. For some reason, it's only valid for boat or land crossing to Canada, not air?! Why not? My wife's Canadian, so we fly there regularly to visit family. Still, I'm glad I spent the extra ten bucks now. It did come with a protective metallic sleeve which I suspect blocks the RFID.

Once again, I was mistaken. It is best to do that in a public forum! ;)

Seems that the law was passed preventing compliance with Real-ID, but somehow
DHS and GA-DMV implemented a compatible system. I'm so confused! From July 1,
2012, new DL/IDs from Georgia have met the Real-ID requirements.

I can't be the only person in this situation. Read on.

On another level I'm confused. Seems the TSA/DHS is saying that Real-ID
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REAL_ID_Act is required to board commercial
aircraft starting Dec 2014 for people born after 1964, but my GA DL, old style,
doesn't expire until 2019. If I want to fly domestically, will my old GA DL
work for ID until it expires in '19?

"A Georgia driver's license or ID Card can be renewed up to 150 days prior to
the expiration date or if the driver’s license or ID card is not expired more
than 2 years."
http://www.dds.ga.gov/drivers/dldata.aspx?con=1742949265&ty=dl

So I can not get renew it until 2019? Huh?
If you were born before 1964, the mandatory date DHS/TSA is Dec 2017. Either
way, I'm screwed.

I've googled and Bing!'ed my brains out to see what I need to do. I don't want
to wait until late 2014 to address this and I don't want to carry a full
passport just to fly domestically.

Am I forced to purchase a federal government ID (passport card?) to fly
domestically? Or do I need to "move" to get a new GA DL earlier? I understand
that entering certain federal buildings will require Real-ID with those same
deadlines. I know that people can fly without any ID, just that the screening
is harder, slower - will I be put into that slower line after Dec 2014?

BTW, Georgia is calling their Real-ID system "Secure ID" - gee - no confusion
there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SecurID

Anyone know something specific?
