In an emergency, I remember booting some systems with those, it took two 
people over an hour. One to read from the 3 ring binder, step by step
the loads.. the other person did the toggles.. then you swapped roles
and checked the positions before popping the "load" button. If you made 
ANY mistakes, you had to start over.

I've also woven core memory beads on a chemistry analyzer and used nixie 
tubes for numeric displays..
