Hi Alex,

Here are a few random things that fall into the use them for what they're worth category, if they're worth anything at all.

This article:

says the ide interface is capable of from 16 MB/s - 133 MB/s depending on it's age.

First, I would back up the hdd, if you can.  It could be failing and doing multiple reads to access things.

Second, I check the smart data and see if you have bad sectors.

Third, I would do a NON DESTRUCTIVE read write test using badblocks.  This will force the drive's controller to analyze and reallocate any sectors that it has to.  This could take days, depending on the size of the drive.  It can be interrupted with CTRL-C and restarted at a certain block.  Make sure you set the options correctly.

Fourth, check for bad sectors again.  If it's growing or is anything above a trivial amount, the drive could be failing.
