I know what you're saying. I now have auto update off for that program. I generally do have it on though. It makes maintenance lots easier, but, obviously, has down sides. Even if it hadn't been on, I probably would have accepted the update when it was offered. I had no reason not to. For those that might need the info, here's how I downgraded back to the old version of Astro File Manager on Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.

.5) Go to settings, security, and check unknown sources to allow installation of non market apps.
1) Assuming you have an old APK file of Astro File Manager ...
2) While the file manager is still on your system, navigate to your old backup file of the APK.
3) Copy that file and paste it into another folder like /sdcard/my-sideloads, just in case something happens during the install, you still have the original backup of it. Some comments say the new Astro is buggy. You could use a different file manager to make the copy.
4) Uninstall Astro File Manager using the google play store and selecting the down arrow icon to show what you have installed.
5) Install another file manager, like ES File Manager.
6) Using ES File Manager navigate to the older APK for Astro in the /sdcard/my-sideloads folder.
7) Tap the APK file to start the install of the older Astro.
8) Accept the permissions and tell it to install.
9) Go back into the google play store and access your list of installed programs.
10) Find Astro File Manager. It should say the program is installed and offer an update. Turn off auto update for that program. Do not touch the update button.
11) Back out of google play and go back in. Check Astro File Manager to see if auto update is off. Be sure to avoid manually updating it ever again.
12) Using the old version of Astro File Manager that you've just reinstalled, go to application backup and backup all your apps. Do this weekly. In the version I have, new backups add to the old ones, so I actually had several old versions of Astro, luckily.

Hope this helps if any of you end up in a similar situation.

Sincerely,

Ron

Sent from my Android Acer A500 tablet with bluetooth keyboard and K-9 Mail.
Please excuse my potential brevity.

(To whom it may concern. My email address has changed. Replying to former
messages prior to 03/31/12 with my personal address will go to the wrong
address. Please send all personal correspondence to the new address.)

(PS - If you email me and don't get a quick response, you might want to
call on the phone. I get about 300 emails per day from alternate energy
mailing lists and such. I don't always see new email messages very quickly.)
