SysRescueCD is designed specifically for this sort of task. It has all
of the utilities mentioned in this thread (I believe), whereas Ubuntu
Live probably does not (pv isn't normally installed by default on most
distros).

I'm no Gentoo fan, but I do like SysRescueCD (it's built from Gentoo).
