Indeed. It's nice.
It is the default in many distributions these days, as well, because it
is the only one that is actively supported by upstream. Additionally,
the fact that it incorporated a lot of functionality that was previously
implemented by distribution-local patching (some distributions
containing GRUB Legacy have over 100 patches to it!) makes it easier and
more "standard" to work with from system to system.
Also, while I haven't played with it just yet, it has support for El
Torito built-in (again, standard feature in GRUB 2, whereas in GRUB 1
that was something that was implemented using distro patches).
