[ale] debugging a Mac snafu

FWIW:
I got the exact same "error 43" on my powerbook in about 2004.
I complained to apple that they should at least tell me what file is
causing the problem.
They send me a 25 pack of DVDs.
I would have rather they fix the error message or make burning DVDs
tolerant of changing files.
