If the router's link light is not coming on when you connect the
working cable to the Macbook Pro, then that's a hardware issue with
the Macbook Pro. I don't know about the USB to ethernet adapter, but
that could just be that it doesn't have a Mac driver. Looks to me like
you might need to make a trip to an Apple store. The ethernet port
could have been put out of commission with a static discharge, for
example.
