A common problem we used to have about 10 years ago was that hard drive
speeds were getting so high and prices were getting so low that most
hardware RAID controllers didn't have fast enough processors to compute
parity fast enough to keep up with even modestly sized RAID 5 arrays.
I bet you can hit the same problem with just a handful of SSDs running
on most lower end hardware RAID cards. My second gen Intel X25
pretty maxes out the SATA 2 ports in my laptop with read speeds up at
295 MB/s.
Fortunately, I doubt very much that there is anyone who would run RAID
5 or 6 across solid state drives :)
