Happy to hear it really wasn't anything, just a scare.

For anything portable, encryption should be considered mandatory. Laptops,
portable flash, portable hdd, netbook, tablet, smartphone, mac-mini, shuttle
systems, any small box with data ... if it could easily walk away, then it needs
to be encrypted IMHO.  If a platform doesn't support encryption, at least use an
encrypted ZIP file with a really-really-really long passphrase for the data.

AND if you are doing encryption, then you need great, automatic, backups. A
corrupted file system or hardware failure seldom happens when it is convenient
or immediately following a full backup.
