[ale] Linux alternative recommendation ?

I use an 8G flash drive with ubuntu 11.10. Not a lot of storage space available after the installation, but I only use it for web browsing and email. Upgrading can be an issue requiring me to clean up disk space.

I'd like to carry a portable Linux USB HD installation for traveling 
with my laptop and would appreciate suggestions, not only for which 
Linux flavor but also which drive.
