I was having an issue where the phone was displaying a certificate error and would not connect to ATT mail servers. I ended changing my mail settings to use the ones below.

Protocol : pop
Pop server: pop.ATT.yahoo.com
Security type: SSL
PORT: 995

Smtp: Smtp.ATT.yahoo.com
SSL port : 465

Not that I know of and I have an iphone 4. I sent Chris the settings
for att/yahoo email. They do use SSL secure connections for both
incoming and outgoing email, so I suspect that might be the issue.

For the archives...

Incoming (POP) inbound.att.net
Outgoing (SMTP) outbound.att.net
(requires authentication)
Incoming mail server: POP3
Incoming/Outgoing User Name: Full AT&T email address, including
domain (e.g., test at att.net, test at bellsouth.net)
Incoming mail port #: 995, secure connection (SSL) checked
Outgoing mail port # 465, secure connection (SSL) checked
