I like a mix of both lower level and higher level languages.  When I
picked up Java I found some objects just make redundant tasks so much
easier to do.  In C we have none of this.  For our projects in C I
started coding representations of Java interfaces and objects.  This
meant I had to mimic objects in C.  No big deal.

When I got to Perl I wanted a web framework that looked like J2EE
servlets but I did not want the Java crude.  I coded a Perl module that
gave me an interface that mimic some of the stuff Tomcat does.  Works
well.

I think what the article states can be summed up about any computing
tasks.  One example is in the role of system administration.  There are
"administrators" and there are Administrators.  I've said it in the past
and I'll say it again.  At one point I thought of myself as a UNIX
admin.  I then started programming in UNIX.  It was at that point I
realized I knew nothing about that system.   Understanding the core
concepts is key to knowing how to fix problems when the framework blows
up!  I think this concept is the key take-way from the article.

I do not want to ruffle feathers but in my opinion, in India I believe
that Java is taught as a vocation and not as a language in the craft of
programming.  I have no proof to back this up I'm just commenting on my
experiences with contractors who work for me that are in India and do
almost 99% Java.  "The Right Way(tm)" does not exist in their world.
