Turned out to be the 3D acceleration. HD 5770 isn't fully supported yet. 
I had suspicions that it had something to do with that so I just removed 
all . files pertaining to compiz and I was able to get in. Unfortunately 
it left my desktop in a really bad way, that just made it difficult to 
use. Reinstalled F14 and I am in the process of gradually restoring app 
config settings and all. I hope they get the 3D working by F15, but I'm 
not going to hold my breath. No more transporter beam effects for now.
