Ron,
I tend to agree with you about your soap-box rant. But if Ubuntu uses
unity, I suppose you could then install gnome. If gnome is not
available, you could install Xfce4 which will work the say you want. As
for gnome shell: Every time I try it, I hate it. Progress does not
mean change the UI for the sure reason of change. What is wrong with
the desktop metaphor?
