[ale] Linux Webcam (for Skype)

Bob,
I also have a Logitech USB camera/microphone combo.
It works well with Skype -- or at least it did -- until I upgraded from FC
11 to FC 13. That broke something, and subsequent versions of Skype have
NOT fixed the issue. The microphone part still works, but not the camera
under Skype. Camera works fine with other apps.
I have seen Skype working with Fedora, so I know it is possible, but I
have not been able to get it working on this FC 13 box. I was hoping that
an upgrade to FC 14 might fix some things. I just need a clear afternoon to
hammer at the upgrade.
If you haven't yet dug down into the Skype settings, you might fiddle
there. The software tries to locate a camera and microphone as well as a
sound system, and sometimes it finds the correct pieces parts . . . and
sometimes it doesn't.
I just tried a test call and the audio part is working -- but Skype lists
the Microphone as a PulseAudio server (local) and no longer offers any
other choices. It lists the Video Device as a UVC Camera (046d:0990)
(/dev/video0). But when I click on the "Test" button, the light comes on
for a second on the camera, then fades out and no image appears in the
test window. If I click on the "test" button again, the software gags and
I have to kill it. I strongly suspect this is a problem with the software
and not the hardware.
As a famous TV detective said many times, "I might be wrong, but I don't
think so." :)
