I have found a couple of references to a problem with samba that causes issues with logins on ubuntu.   Here are two links to forum posts that may relate.  See if your situation matches the suggestions by looking at /var/log/syslog, and see if you see messages similar to the following:

"segfault error 4 in pam_smbpass"

If you see this error, the following command should fix your issue:

sudo apt-get remove libpam-smbpass
