Thank you for all the input - this has been immensely helpful.  On the topic of the memory, the specs list it as DDR3, but the posted reviews say this is wrong.  I'll probably purchase the computer on it's own first, and then look and see myself before spending any more money.  

I was actually directed to this group by one of the people responsible for organizing that event after I sent these same questions to them - I'm planning on attending (and possibly helping with installations myself, since I've done so several times), assuming I can make it between classes (I have a class that overlaps, so if there's still anyone there when I'm through, I'll definitely be there).

I haven't tried Ubuntu with any touch screen devices, but I'd be
interested to find out how well this one works.  All of the other
hardware looks like it would be well supported by Ubuntu.

The memory you linked would NOT work in the "netvertable".  DDR3 and
DDR2 do use different controllers and, with the exception of a few
desktop motherboards early in the DDR3 lifecycle, are not present on
the same motherboard.  (And on those motherboards, they had separate
slots and you could only use one or the other.)

I say should, because I have seen rare incompatibilities between a
particular RAM product and a particular motherboard.  (These have
become even rarer over time.)

Unrelated to your original query, I wanted to let you know that a
group of us are in the process of starting an ALE-NW meeting that will
meet on campus at SPSU.  I hope you'll come join us when we get that
going.
