[ale] Tools for embedded development

I remember messing with embedded development a while back using VIA mini-itx
boards and LinuxBIOS (coreboot). Back then I had to have separate BIOS
chips that I would swap out while the board was running--that was scary.
GUI stuff was done using Embedded QT library, but support for accelerated
video was spotty back then, which made everything slow. I think Coreboot has
come a long way with video support. It might be worth a shot to get into
that again just to see how hard it would be to get something like a thin
client system going. Getting access to an open source BIOS presented a lot
of opportunities for diskless devices that could be booted remotely in very
little time. My project ended after I broke the carrier for the PLCC chip
on my spare board and didn't feel like buying another board. Hopefully,
someone has a tool that can rapidly image PLCC BIOS chips. Anybody have any
nice tools like that?
How about a what tool do you have day?
