[ale] php5 & apache2

I'm trying to install phpmyadmin, but I've never gotten php5 to work with 
apache2 on my Debian box..
every time I try to open a *.php all I get are a never ending web browser that 
continues to open untitled tab, after tab, after tab...
my apache2 works, I host my own web page, and squirrelmail works. I've just 
never figured out what is wrong with php5.
