In this case, the end-users supply the systems and they'll be
Windows XP, Vista and -maybe- Win7. I control the servers: Linux :)

The third factor ( a physical something ) needs to get tied
via a web browser (Firefox) locally.

I bought four "YubiKey" device today just to play with,
I'll post a report after we get done playing with them.
That I can spend just $25-$100 just to play with them is a big factor.
Especially as a deployment is < 50 of these.

I think, as we evolve to more and more web based application programming,
such problems will have to be solved well and cost efficiently.
