Moreover, why not just add a couple accounts for them on the VM and let them SSH in, and just make sure proper emulation is happening for them?

I could understand you not wanting to add accounts for them were it your primary box.  But since this exists solely for this purpose, just add a couple accounts and have them use PuTTY.  Takes just a few seconds.
