It does use the /dev/hdx devices.   

I didn't check to see what other drivers were available - RHEL5 picked it automatically on install.   Maybe lack of it is why Ubuntu users were having difficulty installing?

Anyway RHEL6 is out so I'll probably play with that now.

Isn't the ATA_PIIX driver one of the deprecated ones that use /dev/hdx naming?

I imagine they will be around for years, but you should evaluate
moving to one of the libata drivers which is the main branch now.
(they use /dev/sdx naming, so it's easy to tell deprecated drivers
from main branch).
